Welcome to Galesburg Public Library’s newest service for children, TumbleBook Library, “ebooks for ekids.” This link will enable you to use the TumbleBook Library, a collection of over 150 animated, talking books and related activities. All that is needed is a computer with an internet connection. The site is navigable in English, French, Spanish or Chinese.
Children may use the service by themselves or with a parent, caretaker, reading tutor or teacher. An entire classroom can even log onto the library’s website to read the same book at the same time. Teachers may project a TumbleBook and let the entire class enjoy a story together!
Books may be read in either manual or automatic mode. In automatic mode, the page turn themselves and are narrated. In manual mode, the narration is turned off and the reader turns the pages. There is also a “Pause” button that allows the reader, tutor or teacher to stop the story to practice story prediction, vocabulary, character development and other skills.
The TumblePad Word Helper allows the reader to have a sentence repeated or a word sounded out. Each book’s recommended reading level is noted and linked to books at a similar level. Each title has a TumbleQuiz, a fun flash-animated quiz that can be taken online.
The collection includes a wide variety of books, including old favorites such as Doreen Cronin’s Diary of an Earthworm, and biographies such as Champion: The Story of Muhammad Ali by Jim Haskins. There are also books in French and Spanish and a life-learning collection that focuses on important life skills such as volunteering and tolerance.
