Joy Harjo is the current United States Poet Laureate and the first Native American to hold that title. An American Sunrise is a book of poetry informed by the history of her tribe – the Muscogee (Creek) people – and her connection to the land. Cheyenne Madonna is a series of interconnected short stories about a young Native American man struggling with alcohol and art, the two constants in his life.
