Thursday Book Club – Black Bottom Saints
FEBRUARY’S SELECTION: Black Bottom Saints by Alice Randall
From the Great Depression through post-World War II, Ziggy Johnson has been the pulse of Detroit’s famous Black Bottom neighborhood. A celebrated gossip columnist for the city’s African-American newspaper, he is also the emcee of one of the hottest night clubs, where he’s rubbed elbows with black artists of the era. But now he is ready to hang up his many dapper hats. As he lays dying in the black-owned Kirkwood Hospital, Ziggy reflects on his life, the community that was the center of his world, and the remarkable people who helped shape it.
Presented in partnership with the NAACP Galesburg. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the library.
Discussion will take place upstairs at the library and on Zoom. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for the Zoom link.
