September is Library Card Sign-up Month!

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Galesburg Public Library is celebrating with libraries across the country!

Let’s start off with an important question: Do YOU have a library card?

If you answered no, here’s who can get a Galesburg Public Library card:

                        • If you live within Galesburg city limits, you’ve already paid for your library card (and the goods and services it unlocks for you) through your property taxes.
                        • If you are a student in Galesburg, which includes public and private school students along with Carl Sandburg College students and Knox College students, you are eligible for a library card at no cost.
                        • If you are not a student but you live outside of city limits (but still in the Galesburg school district), you may be eligible for a card for a fee that mirrors what those in city limits pay through their taxes. Otherwise, you may be eligible for a free library card that grants you access to our e-resources.

If you answered no and meet the criteria above, here’s what to do.

      • If you would like to apply for a card online and have it mailed to you, you can apply online through our website.
      • If you would like to get your library card in person and be able to check out immediately, (and meet some friendly librarians,) stop in with your photo ID, and if the address is NOT current on your photo ID, bring a piece of mail with the new address in addition to your ID.
      • If you’re 15 years old or younger, a legal guardian needs to come along, too.
      • If you’re a disabled veteran, you and your family are eligible for a free library card.

Okay, good, now you can go get a library card if you don’t have one. Tell your family and friends.

When you sign up for a library card during the month of September, you’ll be entered to win a prize. Or, if you already have a card, show us at the Check-Out Desk to enter.

Pick up a bingo sheet with some library-specific quests to fill—any bingos get you an extra entry for a prize!

Decorate a leaf however you please so that we can grow a tree on our Simmons St. window throughout the month… because you WOOD not be-LEAF what you can do with your library card. You might even FALL in love with your library. There are so many TREE-mendous things to do with your library card!

Are you convinced yet? How about if we meet you somewhere? Here are a few of the places we’ll be handing out library cards like candy:

Stop in front of the Carriage House on First Friday, September 3, to find us for another sign-up opportunity.

Visit Burke Cleaner on September 12 from 9:00 a.m. until noon and get the library to pay for a load of laundry for you—we’ll be there waiting!

On September 25, you can find us at the Farmer’s Market. We will have swag for you, so please come see us!

And if you can’t come see us, don’t forget that we offer a Home Delivery service for those who are unable to leave their homes due to age, disability, injury, illness, or lack of access to transportation. Just give us a call at 309-343-6118.

You can do a lot more than check out books with that card. We’ve also got movies, audiobooks, CDs, board games, puzzles, cake pans, book club kits, magazines, American Girl dolls, hot spots…. Or you can download e-books and audiobooks straight to your phone if that’s more your style. We have several book clubs to join (some of them involve food!), lots of fun programs for all ages, a movie club, storytimes…. If you’re building your family tree, your card grants you access to the Ancestry database; if you’re hosting a party but you’re a horrible cook (maybe that’s just me), you can access the AtoZ Food America database full of recipes; if you need online tutoring or exam prep, you can access Brainfuse; if you want to learn a new art or craft, you can learn via Creativebug…. There’s something for everyone!

So…. Did you get a library card yet?
