From the Children’s Room — July 2022

Missing the thrill of the Summer Reading already? Don’t fret! There are three different reading challenges kids in grades Kindergarten through eighth grade can participate in.
These challenges run from July 18, 2022 – March 15, 2023. With the completion of a challenge, the reader will receive one free book. More information about each individual challenge is below.

Monarch Award Reading Challenge is for children in grades Kindergarten through 3rd. The Monarch Award, created by the Association of Illinois School Library Educators, encourages children to read books from a variety of genres and authors. To participate in this challenge, readers are encouraged to read at least 5 books from the master list of nominated titles for the Monarch Award.


Bluestem Award Reading Challenge is for children in grades 3rd – 5th. The Bluestem Award, created by the Association of Illinois School Library Educators, aims to encourage children to read a variety of timeless classics and current titles. To participate in this challenge, readers are encouraged to read at least 4 books from the master list of nominated titles for the Bluestem Award.


Rebecca Caudill Award Reading Challenge is for children in grades 4th-8th. The Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award is an annual award given to the author of the book voted most outstanding by students in grades 4-8 in participating Illinois schools. The award is named in honor of Rebecca Caudill who lived and wrote in Urbana, Illinois, for nearly 50 years. To participate in this challenge, readers are encouraged to read at least 3 books from the master list of nominated titles for the Caudill Award.
